Lag

A very simple game where you must guide your character through oncoming enemies to collect packages as they come towards you. Collect a package with your little blue buddy and earn loads of bonus points, but hit any enemies and he'll begin to lag behind your inputs! Created by myself and Matthew Simmons for the Global Game Jam 2009, this game was featured in the Indiegames.com weblog's "Best of the Global Game Jam".

Constraints

Lag was developed under the Global Game Jam 2009 constraints for the UK:

  • The game should be related to the phrase "As long as we have each
other, we shall never run out of problems"
  • A game should last no longer than 5 minutes
  • The game should be related to one of the words "growth", "rushed" or
    "in between"

For the first constraint, both characters are tied together, making it easier to collect point-scoring packages, but also a lot harder to avoid the enemies (hence the "problems"). The game is limited to 3 minutes per round to satisfy the second rule. Finally, to increase difficulty towards the end of the game the green character gets larger as the game goes on (relating it to the "growth" keyword). Overall, the game was developed in just the 46 hours allowed for the event over one weekend.
