Research & Expertise Companies can build expertise through cargo delivery. Their delivery can affect prices and building costs; additionally, an extra level of expertise may be necessary in conducting further research.
Research unlocks certain buildings, improvements and transport options. However, most research involves multiple steps which take time and money to complete successfully.
New technology breakthroughs - like Maglev or AVs - are unlocked through research. Subsequent vehicles will automatically unlock themselves as time progresses. Current research options may change over time: there are currently over 80 Research nodes and 20 Station upgrades installed and more upgrades coming on stream soon!
