Soil - December 2023 update

soil-rts | Soil |

Soil is an unfinished space RTS inspired by Homeworld and others, where players build ships from subsystems made up of hardpoints to go to war against each other and destroy each other using various subsystems like subsystems, hardpoints and turrets; any destroyed ship's debris may also be mined for resources after damage occurs if desyncs do happen (though sometimes automatic resynchronisation happens instead). While initially developed for windows (at least on Ubuntu), Soil also runs with WINE as far as compatibility goes (at least on Ubuntu). Game designed specifically for windows; most likely running with WINE support as it does on Ubuntu Linux)

This update offers new missions and replays as well as updated models and capabilities of Xanthous resourcer, mission briefings and more.

This update took longer to produce and isn't the biggest of updates; let's examine its contents. There have been various small fixes and improvements including camera movement dependent upon game speed keys; option for issuing move commands via two clicks instead of just one; as well as improvements that enhance graphics/animation quality with 2D plane/Z plane distinction in movement commands, among others.

Use Ctrl key instead of click to adjust height), allow players to click mission objectives to highlight further, flash red cross on minimap if ship under attack, fighter and interceptor fighters now attack ships even without fighters present; rather than sitting still waiting.

There have also been some small improvements made to campaign so certain missions become easier (notably you escort mission 07 ) as well as certain missions being more manageable ( namely you escort mission 06 and mission 10 )

Harder to break. Improvements have also been made to multiplayer gaming, including auto-refresh in lobby, message sounds and map preview - along with being able to save and load replays.

At present, replays only support fast forward mode. I attempted to implement instantaneous jump points as an alternative solution but have run into issues implementing them successfully.
After having some trouble saving my game state, and discovering I needed a 3rd-party library (physical state save), I gave up.

Regarding resources, I've added new functionality that allows players to "spawn cargopods", creating fighter sized cargoships which head towards random bases (you usually have at least one).

Currenty only found on Viridian fleet carrier, this cargopod will eventually become part of Viridian station where resourcers can unload cargo pods destined to arrive later at station.
