Steamboat Willie was an animation I watched often when I was young cabin boy, as an animated black and white character named Willie took control of a steam ship in The Caribbean Sail. Disney worked tirelessly for decades to keep their IP protected; as with most creations by individuals or corporations, many want ownership to remain when all those involved with making an asset have died out - this creates a loophole which could put off other intellectual property owners as well as setting an unfair precedent going forward.
Disney used public domain content creatively and imaginatively in an unprecedented manner at that time, creating stories through innovative animation that were both innovative and unbelievable.
